Spitfire Air Cleaner

Hi all, When I bought my 1973 Spitfire 1300 the air cleaner box had been removed leaving the air filters exposed. My question is, do you think it's ok to leave the filters exposed like this or should I reattach the air cleaner box and hoses? Does it have any effect on performance? Thanks. JB

  • I've tried both and am using airfilter set up from 1500 spitfire- its working well as the inlet tube takes in cool air beside the radiator

  • Are the filters the circular paper filters? If they are properly attached to the carbs (i.e. bolted up tight) then there really will be no discernible difference. The only thing is if they are the paper ones and got wet somehow there is a risk of wet paper being drawn into the carb. There is a mild ramjet effect at speed when the airbox is reattached but it,s mostly down to aesthetics.

  • So the most important thing is to have air filters in place, the box and hoses will help the engine to suck in cooler air but the performance imapct is neglible.
If it was me I'd put it back or put on K&N panckae filters but it's a matter of preference.
