OK, by way of a recce for this run and dinner dance that the KVVCCC have invited us on next April Dan Riordan and I (plus partners) went on a run with the club over a long weekend just now. It was great in that we stayed in the same hotel as the event is planned for so it is a full recce including what kind of other activities there are there for the partners .
Just spent a lovely 4 days in Kerry, staying at the Castlerosse Park Hotel, never stayed there before but superb place, very good food and scenic setting. Two couples headed off in two TRs to meet up with a really great multi marque club in Kerry called the KVVCCC (Kingdom Vintage Vehicle Classic Car Club) on the Sunday for a run across a lovely coastal route from Tralee to Foynes in County Limerick. Neither of our party were members of the KVVCCC but they invited us along on their run and at its culmination a visit to the Foynes Flying Boat museum, and wait for this........ gave each of us a €25 fuel voucher to help with our travel costs, extraordinary bunch of people, generous and welcoming. Our destination on the day, the Flying Boat Museum, is well worth a visit. The club had 60 cars at the meet and 40 on the run, hugely dynamic club, if you are ever in the area one could do no better than look out for them.
This area of Kerry is so active at this time of year, at the same hotel we were staying at was a 160 person pre 1950 motorbike rally, a 4 day rally! Some lovely bikes there and covering quite some territory at 120-150 mile runs each day, in hilly country. These folks were hardy people!
FZX and Little Red had their own runs on two of the days, one up and down the Conor Pass near Dingle and another up the Moll's Gap outside Killarney and down into the Black Valley from there and over the Gap Of Dunloe. I've been to Moll's Gap many times and over the Gap of Dunloe many times, walking, rallying and driving but I've never done that run down into the Black Valley from the Moll's Gap side, you need some local knowledge to spot that one and Dan Riordan in FZX provided us with great guiding on the day. Thanks Dan!
For the wildlife fans I include here 2 photos, 1 of a young deer in the grounds of the hotel and one of a sheep precariously grazing the top of a cliff on the Conor Pass, completely unperturbed by the drop and the tourist!
A lovely time was had, weather mostly kind but everything in Kerry in terms of landscape and weather is dramatic, photo attached of hike up Carrauntoohil on a very wet day. It was fun but not for the faint hearted, winds hitting 75mph and carrying a full compliment of water (horizontally)! 600 miles, the cars were pretty much faultless and a popular sight in the hotel and food stops around the county.
Concluding the recce report then, for what its worth our exprience with this club, the hotel and the area has been good and both of us will certainly go to the event next April, I'm condfident it will be everything we could have hoped, great and varied cars, scenery, a very good hotel deal in a very good hotel and a bit of dancing so its not all cars! Let me know if you have an interest and we can keep in touch with the hosts and the hotel. I'll detail the group rate/offer in the hotel shortly. I've a geansy load of bike photos if anyone wants to have a look.
The KVVCCC, Kingdom Veteran Vintage & Classic Car Club are havng a run and an overnight in Killarney on the 24/25h of April, they sent a note about it and very kindly an invitation for any of us who would like to attend, either as a fomal club visit or individually. It will be based in the Castlerosse Park Resort Hotel in Killarney with the Friday planned as a free day around Killarney and the Saturday as the organised run over the Ring of Kerry, they'll have a deal in the hotel and that will extend to us.
Typically these guys will have a hundred or so quality classic cars of all stripes at an event like this, a nice meal and dance on the overnight which is a very good night out. I've done a couple of runs there and its great to get the local knowkedge and support in such great driving country. We can chat about it again closer to the time, having had the kind invitation this is just a heads up to let everyone know its out there.
While we are on the Kerry subject there is another lesser event in August 2025 that I think a few members are planning to attend, more over the northern end of the county. Its a run from Tralee to the flying boat museum in Foynes (which of course isn't in Kerry at all!). This should make a nice trip as well, its more imminent so I'll stick something on the Whatsapp about it, lovely couples trip there, keep everyone happy. 24th August 2025.
