Some Saturday night jobs

As some of you may be aware, i am in the early stages of restoring a GT6 MKIII. I have put together a small contribution for the Herald on this so i won't go into too much detail here but was tipping away at a few jobs this evening so i just thought i'd share a few photos.

  • Also removed the two front head lamps but didnt get a photo
  • The seats that were in the car - I'm guessing these arent the originals? They have seen better days for sure and there is more foam in my kicthen sponge then there is in these.12294005300?profile=RESIZE_710x

  • Great to get into the restoration. Those seats are standard for all mk3 after Feb73

  • Thats looking great Shane- well done and it'll be worth the effort for sure- interesting to see the progress

  •  @Bren, thank for the really useful advice. Trying to get into a habit of bagging and labelling as I go along but as always, could be doing it better. I was considering attempting metal work myself but I have never done anything like that in the past. I had registered for an evening metal work course to learn but had to cancel when the changed the day it would be on. So any bit of help with working on this would be greatly appreciated! Love the work you're doing on the mini. My first car was 91 mini neon which I loved and maybe after Gt6 is done, a mini project could be on the cards! I'm based in santry btw

@ paddy, yeah full restoration done late 80s by a company in Nottingham. I'd be well up for a technical morning to remove engine if people were interested

  • The one great thing about this car is that there was a full restoration of it back in the dazzling veneer of the 1980's..(or at least the photo's of the resto look 80's) correct me if i'm wrong shane. Body is mainly very good apart from a few small rotten patches under rear wheelarches and as mentioned above windscreen pillars. Shane is being modest. He's completely hand scraped old flaking paint, underseal, then surface rust from the entire underside of the car The previous resto spared a body off job this time around. Nice clean, solid metal revealed and chassis looks very good. Engine out next. Possibly a technical morning shane??🤓

  • Hi Shane, good job; a couple of things I have learnt on restos (the hard way) ! Take loads and loads of pictures as our memories ( certainly mine) plays TRicks and just forgets. Secondly bag everything AND write a note on the bag or on paper within as to what the bolts, washers, nuts etc are from, and the way they came off. I know you will prob be replacing all with new but it's nice to replace with the correct ones and in the correct sequence. Finally put them all in a big box, or boxes TOGETHER- I have a habit of dispersing the bits but have great difficulty in finding them when refurbishing/ rebuilding. Oh and make a note of what new parts you need as you disassemble on a big list.........sit down when it's made and when you order the new bits - simple addition will cause you a big fright as to the monetary total!!

will you be doing the metalwork and painting yourself? Where are you based - I will call to you with Dan( restored a Six over 30 years......) if you like.

    • Nice Bren, well done.

    • Nice bren! Lot of work going on there! Welding skills being put to the test! Loving the garage transport solution👌

    • Ta Paddy, we TRy.........and get better with each passing restoration( some say.....some others disagree!)

New rollover jig now in place and making Resto-life easier, certainly easier on the back.

12294263853?profile=RESIZE_930xEndless possibilities to get at all bodywork

Should make fitting the headlining easier.

  • Think you'll find they are original GT6 Seats but the Foams do tend to disintigrate over time.
