New gt6 member

Hi everybody just thought i'd introduce myself as im new to the club. I've been trying to restore my gt6 that i bought in liverpool six years ago. its been a lot of hard work so far (partially my own doing) as if id known it was going to be riddled with as much rust i would have run a mile! Unfortunately most of the rust was covered by that lovely product called "Waxoil" it was well hidden. Anyway as the years progressed I have welded in a lot of new panels in all the usual rust spots and repaired the chassis. Now im under a bit of pressure and at the stage where I need the recommendation of a body shop that will spray the car. Would anyone have any recomendations? Ive  also attached some older pics of the progress .These are a year and a half old and thankfully ive made more progress since. It would be nice to get to the next stage before i run out of enthusiasm!

Thanks

Cian

  • Hi Cian

Welcome to the wonderful world of Ferrous Oxide!

That's a great job you are doing. Plug or spot welds?

    • Hi Tony

Thanks for the compliment. It lets me know that I'm doing something right!  Plug welds as much as possible. They're just stronger and a better  job to be honest. One of the first tools I bought was a punch tool for the plug welds. Drilling out plugs is a bit of a pain though

  • Some great work there Cian and it might be no harm to reach out to local clubs in your area, for instance I occasionally run up to Dollys (C15 WC57) on the second Sunday of each month just to keep in touch with what's going on around the area  - last year met a an who is into his Hillmans who was waxing lyrical about a woman up around Mullagh area who did a great paint job for him, so it pays to ask around - hope to meet you soon at some TCOC event

    best regards

    • Thanks for the advice Bren. Just trying to make the time to meet is always the issue!

  • Thanks for the encouragement gents. I live in  bettystown co meath if anyone knows of a spray shop relatively near by who may take on the work.

  • Welcome to the club Cian keep up the good work.  👍

  • Hi Cian, welcome to the club. You've been doing great work there, it is a bit of a slog but those new panels look great. I see you have a rotisserie supporting the car so I expect you'll have some great photos when you have time! In terms of painters, that seems to be difficult at the moment or maybe it has been for quite some time. As NiallC said below, let us know where you are and that will help, I did meet a guy recently who had just set up a paintshop (Kildare) with his two sons, Brazilian chap, I dont know what his work is like but he does have all the gear. Ken Nolan (I'm sure he'll be along here shortly) I think posted some photos of a GT6 he'd just got painted about 3 years ago, he might have something for you, the photos certainly looked good from memory anyway.

  • Hi Cian this Restoration Craic ain't all it's made out to be it's a long hard slog but the finished article gives much pleasure don't loose faith as it looks like most of the hard work is done,I can't recommended a Painter but it would help if you revealed your location.
