Hi all,
I'm quite new to pretending that I know anything about preparing my Spitfire 1500 from 1977 - and my limited knowledge is getting me stuck.
The background: I was driving the other weekend and felt that the engine would sometime lose power if I pushed the throttle too much (intermittently). I went back home and thought that I would change the fuel filter just for good measure and make sure that at least that wouldn't be the issue.
Current issue: I just tried now to start up the car, and it immediately shoots up pretty much full throttle - and I'm just at a loss as to what could potentially be the issue.
With my wedding creeping closer and a plan to use the Spitfire on the day as my wedding car, it's causing a bit of panic.;)
Would anyone have any suggestions as to what could be the cause?
Thank you very much in advance!
/Tim

Thanks a million for the help - it was indeed as simple as the throttle just being stuck (the linkage was getting stuck at a certain point while letting go of the throttle, keeping it up at 5k RPM.
Unfortunately though, I found out that the fuel filter change didn't solve my intermittent issue of the car sometimes losing power when I give it too much throttle.
Before you start changing too many things check the basic mechanical function of the throttle cable and linkage. Is it sticking at all? Is the return spring intact and pulling the cable fully back freely? Likewise the choke function. Longshot but make sure the distributor has not moved (rotated), it should be pinched tight as this would impact timing. Also check your vacum pipe to the distributor is fitted and has no leaks.
I put a bit of rubber tape on mine to stop it popping out
Check is the Choke sticking on possibly also check that the throttle cable is sitting correctly at the carbs,
