Hi all, I'm new to the world of Triumphs and have limited mechanical knowledge. My helard struggles to idle and stalls when choke is closed. Also it lunges badly when accelerating. Checked and cleaned HT leads, planning to replace plugs and air filter. And attempted to adjust timing. Can anyone offer advice on this?
Thank you very much in advance
Ed

Hey all, thank you all for feedback been very helpful. Herald now runs much better, seems to have been a combination of a few things, old air filter, old plugs, a gunked up carb and a leaking vacuum tube. Been a good learning experience
Super, it really is a very good way to learn, research followed by stuffing about! Next time those symptoms crop up you'll be answering the questions!
Edward it would also be helpful if you included the area where you live as some Members nearby may be able to assist.
Hi Ed, it sounds very like a fuel mixture issue, those symptoms could be a lot of things and indeed a fuel mixture issue can be be caused by a lot of things in itself, so you'll need to do a bit of digging around. Having to use choke all the time to get tickover can be an indication that the car is running very lean, so too much air and not the corresponding amount of fuel. It's well worth having a look for an air leak, a burst hose, a vacuum pipe split or knocked off its connection, have a search around for something like that. Tony's tip is a good one, split rubber diaphragm depending on where it is can cause a lack of fuel or excess air. The running on choke is very good indication of an excess air issue, when you first start to accelerate and experience a hesitation or maybe bunny hops it can be another sign that in that initial throttle opening moment the vacuum advance isn't working well or well enough, again air leak. It's hard to diagnose with just the bit of info we have here but elimate an air leak is a worthwhile start and not complicated to do. We don't know if the car had been running well up until now and has suddenly developed this issue and that would also be helpful?
Hmmm... does your car have a Stromberg carburettor? There is a rubber diaphragm under the dashpot which splits and causes rough running.
