UPDATE #3:
Hi all, sorry to have left such a big gap between updates. I am going to postpone this event until March, I'm usually blessed with rude good health but I lost a lot of time in December with illness and just couldnt put enough time into this to get the result we want so better to postpone than make less of it than we should or could. Have had a great response in terms of team members, all the necessary parts are here now so just promote it now and we'll have a good day in March. Apologies to take some of the gloss off like this but circumstance just worked against me on this one. Dont worry, we'll be back on track in and promoting it in the coming weeks.
UPDATE # 2:
Hi all, the working group has agreed a structure and tentative date range around this charity and FUNdraiser event, mid January 2025, either 12,19 or 26th, we'll confirm the day shortly. We're looking now for volunteers to serve on the start up teams, if you would like to take this opportunity to learn a little, share knowledge with others, participate in the excitement of competition and raising some money for charity then please put your name forward. There are roles for the experienced and inexperienced so please don't hang back, get on board, put your hand up and participate, you're 100% going to have a blast, firing a given up for dead classic for the first time in 40 years its a unique opportunity. There are non competition logistical support roles that we will be looking for volunteers for but lets leave that for now, today we are looking for volunteers to do the work and plan the work and guide the process. We're asking team members to committ to a €20 contribution to our selected charity, they need no experience or tools, just an interest in classic cars.
The TCOC working group for the project will balance the teams out in terms of experience to make the competition fair so don't be shy, places may be limited so get in there, post your interest here, first come first served . If there are a lot of volunteers or a few volunteers don't be swayed, get your name down everyone will get a game so to speak.
We're also looking for volunteers to serve as Team Leaders, the TLs will be full members of the competing teams and again we'll ask for a €20 contribution for a deserving charity, the TLs will help the teams develop a bit of strategy on the day, some technical back up and will liaise with the Team Mentors on safety. The TCOC working group will ask people from the volunteers for the teams to serve as TLs.
There will be two teams, Team 4 and Team 124, Team 4 will be starting a Triumph TR4, Team 124 will be starting a Fiat 124 Sport Coupe. Both are a very similar vintage, both haven't run since the early 80s and both teams will have similar facilities, tools and spares. We envisage a 4-6 hour competition on the day, there will be other fundraising both on line and directly aside from the team members contributions, the competition will be held in Clane, Co. Kildare. There will be a facility for the teams to play limited "ask a friend" cards during the competition, friends can be as expert as you like but must be present on the day, so spectators are encouraged, for spectators we will be asking for a €10 contribution to the charity of choice. Lunch will be provided and strong tea and coffee as required!
For the purposes of structuring the competition itself its important to get a feel for numbers so let's get some names up here folks! Please.
UPDATE # 1:
Hi all, ok so we had a chat about this FUNd raising opportunity at the meeting this day a week ago and there was a fair amount of enthusiasm for it. At the moment there is a small team of volunteers from the meeting working to bring the concept to the next level which would be having something fully fleshed out that we could get everyone on board with. Within this week we should be able to post some details here but as a teaser to whet appetites, you'll recall from the meeting the proposed event would in principle be a members team competition around starting two old cars which haven't run for 40 years.
For now just to keep interest alive I thought you might like to know, this morning I rotated each engine by hand and filled the bores with kerosene. Both rotated fine so we've passed through the first gateway to putting on this event, we have two engines that can run😁.
ORIGINAL POST
There's lot of obvious fun in classic cars, the sunny days driving, the nosing around other's cars and shows, the nostalia around driving and working on something that perhaps we last did some decades ago. But there's one less obvious one thats not on that list, resurection folks, thats the missing one, turns out lots of people absolutely love the moment the old abandoned pile of crap fires into life after a stoppage of longer than half the population have lived! There's a great video on this website of an occasion in Luke Fenner's garage where many members of the club participated in starting an old engine and at the time I was looking at joining the club it really resonated with me as being so like the times during my youth where a gang of us gathered in someones garage or shed to start some yoke we'd dragged out of a ditch or scrap yard. Musing on that enjoyable period and time I realised in hindsight how much I had learned from those occasions, about the basics of mechanics as related to cars and engines. It seemed ordindary back then but now its not ordinary at all, the next generations of car enthusiasts couldn't pull something out of a ditch, go through the basics and start it, because the electrics and software wouldnt permit it and talking to those younger enthusiasts I sometimes find their understanding of how the fundamentals work is superficial, they've never lived it if you like, so in a way there's a learning opportunity lost there and a real fun opportunity lost too.
We could kill several birds with one stone here perhaps, have that fun starting an old timer thats had too long a rest, offer members searching for that learning experience an opportunity, maybe do something for charity and bring a bit of an edge to the process by competing. I'm fundamentally lazy, just love the ole many birds one stone thing! Have a mull over of that and we might have a chat about it on Sunday at the meeting, thank you to Paddy for the lead in and there's a few video links below that perhaps lend some context, not all Triumphs but as Arthur Shelby says "same f**king thing". .

Hi Niall, please add my name (at this moment in time I don't think I can make the 12th). Thanks, Roger
Hopefully I'll be around somewhere on the Day but due to other reasons I can only commit to a Donation so count me In or Out as a maybe on the Day.
Hi Niall, yes great plan as others have rightly stated. Would love to be included even as a spectator. Sorry, can't make the 19th but 20E will still be extracted from the moneybox. Kevin 😀
Count me in to do what ever is needed!
Well done Niall - I have entered those dates on"OUR" calendar so will have the overalls cleaned and pressed, and Santy is hopefully supplying the Edd China gloves so will be prepared for the ‘dirty work’ on offer - whatever it may be - enjoy the Christmas Party next week
